Ginger Rhizome Planting Instructions

Our ornamental ginger rhizomes are grown outdoor coastal North County San Diego in a semi-sun to shaded conditions in a sand/gravel/clay mixture.  We recommend finding a spot that is semi shaded to shade for coastal communities or somewhere in bright, shaded spot all day for the inland communities.  Dig a small trench about a foot deep, foot wide and a foot longer than the rhizome tilling up the soil in the trench.  The rhizomes should be buried, roots facing down, just beneath the level of the soil allowing them to collect any runoff water, with about 1-2 inches of soil covering the top of the rhizomes. Plant rhizomes about 1 foot apart from each other.  Best to plant around the beginning of March.  Water and fertilize 3-4 times a week and daily on Santa Ana like days or areas with warmer climates for best results.  Flowering beings around July.  Contact us if you have any questions.
